Biography
Étienne Ghys is a mathematician. Director of research emeritus at the CNRS, he contributed to the creation and development of the mathematics laboratory at ENS Lyon. His scientific work focuses on geometry, topology and dynamical systems. His results, for example, have enabled us to better understand the topology of the famous Lorenz butterfly, a paradigm of chaos theory. In recent years, he has been involved in a number of outreach initiatives, including the production of mathematical films and the founding of an online journal aimed at the general public. He is particularly interested in educational issues. He has been awarded the CNRS Silver Medal (1991), the Clay Prize for the Dissemination of Mathematics (2015) and the CNRS Mediation Medal (2022). He has been invited four times to the International Congress of Mathematicians (1990, 2006, 2010 and 2018), holds honorary doctorates from Geneva (2008) and Neuchâtel (2018), and is a member of the Academies of Lyon, Brazil, Mexico and Europe. Elected perpetual secretary in January 2019.
